Marine Biogeochemistry short course 2021 on Application of Isotopes in Ocean, Earth, and Environmental Research

Quarta, 26 Maio, 2021 a Sexta, 4 Junho, 2021

Descrição do Curso

The COVID19 pandemic has prevented the realization of last years’ edition of the Marine Biogeochemistry Course and it will also prevent it from taking place in-person this year, forcing us to postpone the course to 2022. However, many students have registered and have been patiently waiting for the 2021 course, and so, we are planning to offer a virtual short course centered on the use of different isotope systems in geological, oceanographic, biological, and environmental studies at low temperature.

The course will cover the use of isotopes as tracers for weathering rate, biogeochemical cycling, food-web structure, ecology, paleo ocean chemistry, archeology, provenance, ocean circulation, anthropogenic impacts, and more. We will cover a broad array of elements including: O, C, H, N, Si, S, B, Sr, Ca, Mg, Li, Os, Nd, Pb, Th, U, Mo, Hg, Fe and other metals.

The fact that the course will be virtual enables world experts on these isotope systems to give virtual lectures and we are hoping that all the contacted colleagues (table below) will be able to joint us.

Agenda

This is a virtual short course that will take place from May 24th to June 4th, from 4 to 6PM (GMT).
On each day 2 isotope systems will be covered. Each topic will consist of 45 minutes lecture by expert instructors followed by 15 minutes of discussion and questions, to best accommodate for the different time zones the course will take place.
Reading materials will be provided for each topic. The last session will consist of short student presentations.
