Seminar: Alzheimer's disease-related b-amyloid recognition with antibody fragments

Title: Alzheimer's disease-related b-amyloid recognition with antibody fragments

Speaker: Isabel Morgado
(Max Planck Research Unit for Enzymology of Protein Folding and CME-CCMAR)

Abstract: Alzheimer´s disease is related with the aggregation of a peptide (β-peptide) into pathogenic protein structures called β-amyloids. We have isolated from a synthetic library two antibody fragments against β-amyloid structures, produced their crystal structure and characterized the antibody-amyloid interaction. The antibodies were able to interfere with β-peptide aggregation and to impair its toxicity in mice neurons. Such anti-β-amyloid antibodies represent invaluable tools in Alzheimer´s research and hold potential for future clinical and therapeutic applications.
