Main

Our aim is to investigate the processes that regulate marine plant production at different organizational levels: molecular, plant, community and ecosystem. Knowledge on these processes is instrumental to understand the role of marine vegetation in the structure and functioning of coastal systems and to assess the impacts of human-induced disturbances including climate change. Our scientific output is expected to contribute to the valuation, management and conservation of the ecological services of vegetated coastal systems.

The July issue of National Geographic magazine highlights the work of our researcher Leonardo Mata, for his research on the cultivation of red macroalgae capable of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.
In the next years, Carmen will research the capacity of coastal vegetated ecosystems and her main objective is to assess the Blue Carbon stocks in continental Portugal. Welcome to the team!
The genus Caulerpa has attracted a lot of attention because many of its species became notoriously invasive. This is the case of the green algae Caulerpa prolifera that has been rapidly expanding in the Ria Formosa lagoon.
Oswin will study fluxes of CO 2 and CH4 in salt marshes and seagrass meadows in Ria Formosa. Welcome to the team!
Alizé is working as a research fellow for seagrass restoration projects in Ria Formosa. Welcome!
