NEW ON BOARD: Catarina Adão

1. Tell us a bit about the work you’ll be doing at CCMAR.

I will be working primarily in a project to improve the quality of life of the fishing communities in the Bons Sinais estuary (Quelimane, Mozambique) using an integrative approach to increase the knowledge on the biology, ecology and socio-economics aspects of fisheries in this estuary. I will also be involved in other two projects – climate change effects on coastal fisheries and characterization of small crab species with commercial interest. Working group: Ecology and restoration of riverine, estuarine and coastal habitats (ECOREACH)

2. What were you doing before you joined us?

Last year I worked as a fisheries observer in the Azores and Madeira on-board pole and line vessels for about 5 months, and recently I worked from home office also for CCMAR with a scholarship of 4 months in order to finish the writing of a scientific article.

3. What are your interests and hobbies when you’re not doing science?

I truly enjoy spending my free time as close as possible to nature, so I entertain myself with a number of outdoor activities – swimming, snorkelling, hiking, running, and especially rock climbing. These take me to remote and beautiful places where I can reconnect with the wilderness and recharge mental energies for the working week.
