In 2017, the MARSW project began, of which CCMAR is a partner, in which the main goal, successfully accomplished, was to develop an information and monitoring system of the marine biodiversity in the marine area of the Sudoeste Alentejano and Vicentina Coast Natural Park - PNSACV. This system allows to monitor the distribution of communities and habitats in this marine area, as well as to create tools to assess their conservation status over time. This information is very important for the management of PNSACV, which must ensure the efficient conservation of marine biodiversity, including priority habitats and species of the Natura 2000 Network.

The project was coordinated by LPN (Liga para a Proteção da Natureza) in partnership with the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (ICNF).

Over the past three decades, CCMAR in partnership with the University of Évora and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon of MARE, has contributed to the study and protection of the species and marine habitats of this marine protected area. The researchers provided technical and scientific support through studies, advice, and training in the areas of commercial and recreational fishing, marine habitat mapping, scientific diving, and marine biodiversity conservation and restoration.

CCMAR has been very involved with ICNF, and our researchers have delivered several reports on marine biodiversity and fisheries in PNSACV, and a list of indicators that should be monitored in the Portuguese Marine Areas and that were defined with the collaboration of POSEUR, Inforbiomares and OMARE projects, and national experts.

This project, which ended in the summer of 2021, aims to inform the governance entities, for a more efficient conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in this Natural Park. In addition, it also aims to reach stakeholders and users of marine parks, to stimulate their interest in the benefits that the protection of this area can bring.
