NEMA - New Marine Species of the Algarve - is a citizen science initiative aiming at increasing our knowledge on some marine species that are new to the south coast of Portugal (Algarve). Some of these species may have been introduced by Humans, other are expanding their geographical distribution to Northern latitudes because of climate change, and others are native to our coast yet their abundance or distribution may be changing as a result of habitat change or climate change.

Local communities, with their own local ecological knowledge, can effectively contribute to advance scientific studies. We count on the public to let us know if they spotted new marine species in the Algarve region. All the submitted observations are available in the citizen science platform BioDiversity4All, where everyone can check what other citizens have found in our coast: https://www.biodiversity4all.org/projects/nemalgarve
