Main info

Potential of halophyte plants from extreme maritime environments as sources of innovative products for use in veterinary parasitology

XtremeVet will explore the use of selected halophyte plants (HP) as sources of innovative products for veterinary use, focusing on gastro intestinal nematodes (GINs). The Portuguese partner [MarBiotech, Centre of Marine Sciences (MB/CCMAR)] will provide samples to be tested (biomass/extracts) from selected HP with ethnoveterinary uses and rich in polyphenolics, and evaluate them for nutritional properties and bioactivities relevant to improve animal health. The French partner [Host-Pathogen Agents Interactions Unit, French National Institute of Agronomic Research (HPAI/INRA)] will evaluate the in vitro antiparasitic of the extracts against GINs. XtremeVet will complement knowledge gathered during previous R&D projects, enable the MB group to widen its reasearch area to veterinary medicine, contribute to the exchange of knowledge/training of researchers, particularly young ones and strengthen the relationship between CCMAR and INRA aiming the preparation of future research applications.
