Main info

Experimental fishing was conducted off the port of Portimão (southern Portugal) from November 2021 to February 2022 within the framework of the national project TECPESCAS (Mar 2020 16-01-04-FMP -0010 – IPMA), with the objective of comparing standard trammel nets targeting cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and flatfish species with modified nets rigged with what the fishers call “aranha”. This modification consists of a net section inserted between the leadline and the net panels, which lifts the net off the bottom, making it a good option to reduce invertebrate by-catch and protect the nets of vessels operating with trammel nets in rocky areas. The results obtained demonstrated that the use of the modified net did not negatively affect the catch rates of the target species, furthermore, resulting in a significant decrease of 36% in the discards of invertebrates. The aim of the TramSel project is to expand the geographic location of the experiments, testing the modified net in the cuttlefish fishery onboard vessels from other ports of the country, and extend this concept to other fisheries with the expectation of decreasing by-catch of other demersal species. The good results already obtained, along with the fact that this modification should not add much cost to the original net, are factors in favour of the adoption of the new net in the commercial activity.
