The Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) opens a position for a Master's Fellowships (BM - Bolsa de Mestrado) within the research project: EMSO-PT: Refª PINFRA/22157/2016 – EMSO-PT “European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water Column Observatory”, under Sistema de Apoio à Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (SAICT), funded by the European Regional Development Fund (POCI, PO Lisboa and PO Algarve) and National Funds through FCT– Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. – (MCTES) under the following conditions:

Work Plan and Tasks to perform:
EMSO – PT is part of a European wide Consortium named EMSO ERIC (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water Column Observatory – European Research Infrastructure Consortium.

This fellowship (BM) is intended for research and development activities, carried out by students enrolled in a Master Degree in Engineering or Marine Sciences, with the purpose to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the award of a master degree and associated tasks. Specifically to set up an oceanographic mooring off Southwestern Iberia Outer Continental platform, as part of the Iberian Margin (Gulf of Cadiz) node.

The fellowship holder will be involved in the following tasks:

1)    Technical Support and maintenance of equipment related to EMSO – PT (land – base and sea going) and other related works in the scope of sea observations.
2)    Specific focus on maintenance and calibration of instruments and sensors and retrieval of dataset and other related work.
3)    Assisting colleagues in managing and preparing data for online access. Data diffusion will be through the CCMAR, EMSO.PT and EMSO – ERIC platforms.
4)    Scientific and outreach reporting and publication of results achieved during the fellowship.

Work place:
The workplace is CCMAR (Gambelas Campus of the Algarve University, Faro, Portugal). Visits to IPMA (Algés) for training might be required.

Requirements for the application:
1.    A BSc. Degree in Eletrotecnical, Electronic, Mechanical, or Informatics Engineering,  or in a field related to Marine Sciences.
2.    To be enrolled in a cycle study to obtain Master Degree, in the field of Engineering or Marine Sciences.

It is considered as desirable that the applicants have experience in the following techniques, as demonstrated in their curriculum vitae:

a)    Experience in technical support in the maintenance of sea equipment.
b)    Experience in the maintenance and calibration of equipment and sensors and recovery of data sets.
c)    Experience in data management.
d)    Demonstrated ability in the elaboration of reports and in information dissemination.

Non-compliance with any of these requirements at the time of application invalidates the application. Provision of false documentation will be punished by law.

Evaluation criteria: 
Through analysis of the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae and motivation letter the evaluation criteria are as follows:
1)    Experience in the technical support of sea equipment’s maintenance (25%)
2)    Experience in calibration of instruments and sensors  and in the recovery of data set. (25%)
3)     Experience in data management (20%)
4)    Proven ability in the elaboration of reports and in information dissemination (20%)
5)    Interpersonal relation and communication skills in Portuguese and in English (10%)

The Selection Committee reserves the right to contact or interview applicants, if further information or clarification about their application is required.

In the event that no applicant has the necessary profile, the Selection Committee reserves the right to close the call without recruitment. If the applicant ranked first does not accept the position, or if the fellowship holder should resign, the Selection Committee reserves the right, upon convenience and opportunity, to select applicants from the same call following the position in the ranked list.  

Fellowship conditions: The fellowship will have an initial duration of 05 months, starting in December 2020 and is, eventually, renewable up to the end of the project on June 29th, and never exceeding a maximum of 24 months. Application period: from 18th of November to 03rd of December 2020.

Application submission process: Applications (in English) should include a motivation letter (in English), a detailed Curriculum Vitae (can include support documents), copy of the BSc. Diploma, the declaration of honour available in the application platform, copy of the enrolment in a Master Degree and the email contact of up to 3 referees. Applications are considered to be correctly submitted only after the candidate has received a confirmation e-mail from CCMAR.

Results and Preliminary Hearing: The judgement of the selection committee will be communicated in writing (by email) within 90 working days after the application deadline. After notification, candidates have 10 working days to contest the preliminary decision sending an email to the selection committee.

Candidates holding degrees awarded by a foreign university should have their degree recognized in Portugal no later than 10 days after receiving the communication of selection for a position. Non-compliance justifies exclusion from the procedure. Information about the recognition procedures can be obtained at any Portuguese university or here. The board of directors reserves the right, upon request from the candidate, to extend the compliance period provided it does not impact negatively in the programmed activities.
