Laboratory Technical Officer [M/F] - 1 vacancy

The Algarve Centre for Marine Science (CCMAR) opens a vacancy for a Laboratory Technical Officer (M/F) to satisfy temporary needs under an uncertain term employment contract in order to support the work carried at the IPMA-Algés at DivGM in  the context of the EMSO-PT project Refª PINFRA/22157/2016 – EMSO-PT “European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water Column Observatory”, under Sistema de Apoio à Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (SAICT), funded by the European Regional Development Fund (POCI, PO Lisboa and PO Algarve) and National Funds through FCT– Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. – (MCTES).

Tasks to perform: 
⦁    Preparation of marine sediments for analysis of siliceous and carbonate microfossils (Diatoms and Planktonic Foraminifera); 
⦁    Picking of foraminifera for dating and isotope analysis;
⦁    Identification and counting of both groups; 
⦁    Possible participation in oceanographic campaigns; 
⦁    Maintenance of optical laboratory and organization of SEM activities.

Salary: Monthly gross salary of 1566.61€

Required profile: 
The candidate should: 
1.    Hold a MSc. degree in Geology, Chemistry, Ocean Sciences/Oceanography or related fields. 

Only applicants that fulfil the required profile will be considered. 

It is considered as an advantage to have experience in the preparation of marine sediments and microfossils identification.

Working contract conditions: uncertain term employment contract starting in February 2021. 

Working Schedule: 35 hours weekly. 

Working Place: IPMA –Algés, Portugal.

Selection Criteria: The selection will be based on the documents provided (Curricular Assessment – CA) but the selection committee reserves the right to contact and interview candidates with the sole purpose of clarifying any curricular aspect. 

The curricular assessment (CA) is expressed from 0 to 20 points corresponded to the value of the arithmetic formula CA=(A+2B+C+D)/5 expressed to the first decimal. 

A –Master Degree final score
B – Experience in the preparation of marine sediments and microfossils identification:
⦁    Experience in previous projects (15 to 20 points)
⦁    Experience from internships or practical work with specific guidance (11 to 14 points)
⦁    Experience from practical classes (10 points)    
⦁    No experience (0 points)

C – Computer practice
⦁    Experience in previous projects (15 to 20 points)
⦁    Experience from internships or practical work with specific guidance (11 to 14 points)
⦁    Experience from practical classes (10 points)    
⦁    No experience (0 points)

D – Knowledge of the English Language:

⦁    Attested by a recognized training school (15 to 20 points)
⦁    Knowledge from the regular school system (11 to 14 points)
⦁    No knowledge (0 points)

In the event that no applicant has the necessary profile, or the funding conditions have significantly changed since the announcement of this position, the selection committee reserves the right to close the call without any recruitment. In the event that the applicant fist ranked does not accept the position or the contract holder should resign during the contract, the jury reserves the right, upon convenience and opportunity, to assign the post to the next applicant in accordance with the ranking positions.

Results: The decision of the selection committee will be communicated in writing by email.  All admitted applicants will be ranked in order of the final classification. After notification, candidates have 10 working days to contest the preliminary decision sending an email to the selection committee

Candidates holding degrees awarded by a foreign university should have their degree recognized in Portugal no later than 10 days after receiving the communication of selection for a position.
