NEW POSITION: João Encarnação

Tell us a bit about the work you are/will be doing at CCMAR.

On the context of my PhD I will be assessing the present distribution of new species across the Algarve coast. These may be invasive species or not, ranging from fish to crustaceans or jellyfish. We will work towards expanding the network of citizens collaborating with our research group (ECOREACH) in order to enhance early reports of new species. Turning potential treats to the environment into new resources of additional revenue are also main concerns.

What were you doing before you joined us?

Until last year I was a SCUBA instructor and skipper at Subnauta dive center in Portimão, where I was also part of the biological monitorization program implemented at the Ocean Revival project sunken ships at Portimão. Before that period, I already collaborated with CCMAR’s ECOREACH group since my bachelor degree, through my Master thesis.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Mostly I enjoy any outdoors activities, ocean related if possible!! Underwater photography, SCUBA diving, bodyboarding, fishing.
