SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND ILLUSTRATION
My first projects involving illustration as a mean to do science communication and environmental education started back in 1996, as a volunteer. After attending Scientific illustration class at the University of Évora, I started using drawing as a tool to accurately depict wildlife.
In 2007 , together with like-minded people, I started a company called GOBIUS Communication and Science. For more than 10 years, I have developed illustrations, infographics, books, websites, communication campaigns, visual identity for research institutions, science exhibits and much more. My scientific illustrations and infographics have been published in the portuguese National Geographic magazine, scientific journals, reports, several books and many other minor for the general public.
Other fields of interest
Ecology and Ornithology
In 1995, I entered a 5-year Biology course (pre-Bologna) at the University of Évora.
Started working as a professional ornithologist in 1999 and worked as a biologist mostly doing fieldwork, faunal surveys (based on land but also at sea) and environmental monitoring (incl. fisheries observation) until 2009. I worked all over Southern Portugal, and worked at sea under snow fall in the NW Atlantic and over the indigo blue waters of the Azores or the Gorringe Bank.
Nowadays, I still participate in field projects, either in my home region of the Algarve or abroad (e.g. surveying for Egyptian vultures in Turkey in 2012, or monitoring migrant birds at a windfarm in Egypt in 2017). I have been a volunteer in various ornithology related projects in Portugal. In the past I have been a Volunteer coordinator in the Algarve for two Atlas projects, and I have been a voting member of the Portuguese Rarities Committee since 2012 .
Ornithological tourism
From 2002 onwards I voluntarily made myself available to help travelling birders make the most out of their trip to Southern Portugal (through a website called Birdingpals, which I represented at a Workshop about Ornithological Tourism in Portugal, in 2008). In 2014, I started working as a freelancing birdwatching guide in Southern Portugal. I work often through Birds & Nature (PT) and also through Naturetrek (UK) for people mostly from Western Europe and North America.
