João L. Saraiva graduated in Biology in 2000 by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, completed his MSc in Ethology in 2004 at ISPA-IU (Lisbon) and his PhD in Aquatic Sciences in 2009 at the University of Porto, all in Portugal. He is an invited lecturer of Ethology at University of Algarve also in Portugal, Principal Investigator of the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at the Center of Marine Sciences in Faro and president of the Fish Etho Group Association. João's main focus is in the application of ethological knowledge into the assessment and improvement of the welfare of aquatic animals. João authored nearly 100 scientific publications (including papers, reports, theses and book chapters) and was editor of the book "Welfare of Cultured and Experimental Fishes". He has also participated in several national and international projects throughout his career, both as researcher and as PI, from crustaceans to fish, from the tropics to Northern latitudes, from rivers to coral reefs and from intertidal to pelagic species. João works as a researcher in the areas of behaviour and welfare of aquatic animals (in the wild, in aquaculture and in fisheries), coordinates training programs in these areas and performs consultancy work for European Union official bodies (e.g. AAC, EFSA, European Commission and Parliament) as well as several international companies and institutions. He is also part of the European Reference Center for the Welfare of Aquatic Animals EURCAW-fish.
