Senior researcher of the Centre of Marine Sciences of the Algarve (CCMAR) and an Visiting Professor at the University of Cadiz (UCA-FCMA) and at the University of Algarve (UALG-FCT). PhD on fisheries ecology by the University of Algarve (UALG) in 2000. He is a founder, and member of the board and scientific council of CCMAR. He has more than 30 years of experience in the marine scientific research field linked with fisheries management and marine ecology. He has coordinated more 40 national and international projects associated with fisheries management, habitat mapping, marine spatial planning and marine biodiversity conservation. He published 126 papers in peer review international journals and 4 book chapters and 12 books/manuals about this field of study. Jorge has been a reviewer of 39 of those scientific journals and member of the editorial board of Frontiers in Marine Science | Marine Fisheries, Aquaculture and Living Resources and Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. Furthermore, he has been acting as a project evaluator for several EU programs (FP7, H2020, MSC grants, Horizon), the EEA grants, and scientific councils of Croatia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Norway and Portugal. His main drive is to contribute to increase the knowledge about marine habitats, improve fisheries management and create more efficient MPAs, leading to healthier oceans.
